Green Bean Casserole


  • 750 g green beans (black-eyed peas)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter 
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 8 mushrooms (coarsely grated) 
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 cup of whipped cream
  • 1/2 cup unsalted chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. soy sauce 
  • 225 g fresh cheddar cheese (grated)
  • 1 cup caramelized onions

  1. Add salt to the boiling water in a large saucepan and boil the beans for 7-8 minutes so that they remain slightly raw. Drain the boiled beans, rinse them under cold water, and set them aside.
  2. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and mushrooms and sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and sauté together. Then add the cream while stirring.
  4. Then add the chicken broth, stir, and cook for about 6-7 minutes more to get a thick consistency. Remove from the heat.
  5. Add half of the grated cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, and soy sauce, and stir again.
  6. Then add the boiled green beans, keep stirring, and transfer the mixture into a pre-oiled baking dish. 
  7. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top, cover with baking paper, and bake in a preheated 180-degree oven for 25 minutes. 
  8. At the end of the cooking time, remove it from the oven and spread the caramelized onions over it. Bake in the oven for another 10 minutes, and serve hot.
